Slowing down

On a recent trip to Mumbai, I took an auto rickshaw to the Santa Cruz airport.

The driver drove at speeds slightly less than an aeroplane, even when I tried indicating to him that there was no need to hurry. I had ample time to catch the flight, more than 2 hours.

Guess his intention was to charge me the equivalent of a flight ticket by displaying his performance. πŸ™‚

I have been like that auto rickshaw guy. I have been publishing posts nearly every week for the last 32 months or so, as if I am on some kind of a deadline.

So I have decided to slow down. Take things a bit slowly, follow a few principles of the slow media manifesto.

Going forth, I will be publishing maybe once or twice a month. Slightly longer posts perhaps, and with pictures, but the style will stay the same – simple, genuine and easy to read.

As a Yoga teacher in Mumbai and the co-founder of a fitness consultancy in Mumbai, I struggle to even keep up with the 1 article on Yoga a week compulsion that I set upon myself. Writing an original article is tough work and can sometimes take the better part of the day away and the returns are not so tangible unlike say taking personal yoga classes for my clients where every hour spent equals money! But then I look at writing as a way of giving back to society and the wonderful readers who turn up at our blog regularly to get some advice from experts and rejuvenate their fitness regimens. And that is always something that makes me sit down and write regardless of how many hours I have spent doing so. A cup of strong espresso also helps!

For me, writing is more of a hobby. Writing with discipline has helped, but also, slowing down has helped me think more deeply.


  2. Creative writing is quite an intense activity. It is admirable that you developed this passion with seriousness and contributed on several topics over a long period (more than 120 for over 32 months). We enjoyed reading them and learnt a lot of new things.

    As you expressed, it is time to go slow, silght effort to restrict your hardware power and try to consolidate the effort put in so far to build something more creative that you enjoy and help people like us to learn more.

  3. Good Idea. There is an old proverb: Haste makes waste. The right approach is β€œJust in time”.

    It is good that you are fighting Family Genetics. You know most of us on your mother’s side of family are suffering from this trait.

    I too, am finding it hard to maintain my schedule of gym, Yoga classes, meditation etc. and thinking of cutting down the amount of time on each of these activities. But what really I should be cutting down is 800 lb. Gorilla in the room, reading political news. If I can do that successfully I would have lots of spare time.

    Logically it should be easy, but it is not. I may be afflicted by this passion since my days in Engineering. In spiritual terms it can be called MOHA and have to free myself of it. In our electronics & computer terminology, I am trying to determine whether it is hardware or software issue. If it is software then presumably I can reset it with right code. If it is hardware I can not change it.

      I am surprised that you are managing gymming, yoga and meditation all at once. Nowadays, I just do gymming 3 times a week and try Surya Namaskars every morning.

      I am also reading more physical books and trying to decrease time on screens. πŸ™‚


      1. I am also trying to read physical books, with idea of writing a book, and have set up schedule to go to library every day, but it is not working out well.


  4. Must be telepathy! I too want to restrict my email/computer use and severely restrict Facebook though many friends post some interesting links on it!
